Conference Schedule and Speaker Details

The conference team has been working diligently to formulate the EAS Conference 2022. As the short course and main conference come together we are assembling a roster of excellent speakers, including Dr. Tom Seeley, Professor of Biology Emeritus, in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University, Dr. Scott McArt and Emma Walters – Cornell University. These folks will participate in both the short course and the main conference providing the latest in research, extension work and beekeeping.

The short course will feature experiences for all levels, from Beginners to Advanced. We are excited to collaborate with the historic Dyce Lab which will serve as the site of a portion of the short course as well as a microscopic component that will span both the short and full conference.

Kutik’s Everything Bees, family-owned and operated since 1978, will be hosting a Wednesday afternoon tour and demonstrations at their facility in Oxford. The day will culminate in a wonderful evening barbecue on site. An excellent opportunity to visit a commercial beekeeper with multiple endeavors including queen rearing, nuc production, pollination, and honey harvesting.

Auctions will include a virtual online before the conference, silent auctions during the conference and a live auction on Thursday evening. If you or your company wishes to donate an item for auction, please check the web page for instructions.

Our vendors will have a large venue in which to demonstrate and offer their latest equipment and products – always a highlight of an EAS conference!

Additional social events will include a “dine around Ithaca” on Monday evening with registrants joining a local beekeeper at one of the varied restaurants in the area to chat bees and sample the local culinary scene.
The Ithaca area offers many local activities including hiking, boating and fishing in public parks and waterways and dining opportunities to fit any palate and budget. Accommodations range from camping to dormitory accommodations to motel and hotel venues – something for everyone. The area is known for the production of wine and abounds with wineries and meaderies allowing you to sample the products of our local vineyards and apiaries.

Becoming a Volunteer

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Conference as it runs throughout the week. As the conference is being planned, there are teams of folks and committees ironing out details. But, when the conference starts, it takes on-site EAS members serving as volunteers to make the conference a success. Volunteers are needed to help as room monitors, with the honey exchange, the children’s program, auction setups, transportation of speakers from and to the airport, assistants on field trips, meal supervisors, signage and more. Something for everyone.

The following are guidelines to help you decide how many hours you wish to volunteer: ·If volunteering for 4 to 7 hours, you can attend the conference for the remainder of the day for free.·If you volunteer for 8 hours, you can attend a second day of the conference for free and get a volunteer t-shirt, or you can split the 8 hours of volunteering and 8 hours of attending talks between two days. ·If you volunteer for 16 hours (2 days), you receive a volunteer T-shirt and the other days of the conference for free. All volunteers will be signing in each day to log their volunteer hours and be given their assignment, hopefully one that is similar to your requested activity. You will also be noting what times that day you will be spending as a ‘conference attendee’ so that can be tracked as well. All volunteers must be EAS members. Annual membership fee is $35.Thank you for your interest in making EAS 2022 in New York a success!

After you register as a volunteer, you will be contacted to sign up for the day(s) and time(s) that suit you best. The conference cannot be run without our strong EAS community of volunteers and we thank you in advance for your service in making this another great conference.

Volunteer REGISTRATION

EAS 2022 Conference Includes:

EAS 2022 Conference runs from Monday, August 1^st to Wednesday, August 3^rd and features a Beginner/Hobbyist, Intermediate/Side-Liner and Advanced Beekeeper level and you may move freely between these levels within the short course. In addition, there are two featured courses: Microscopy and Queen Rearing. The Microscopy course has open lectures on the Monday morning that all may attend and laboratory time in the afternoon that has space limitations and requires specific registration. The Queen Rearing course on Tuesday has very limited space off campus. Please see the registration procedure for details of these two courses and specify your choice during your registration process. Social events will include a welcoming reception from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 31^st for short course participants to gather and socialize. There will be a “Dine Around Ithaca” on Monday, August 1^st with local beekeepers – be sure to check the registration form and upon registration sign in that starts at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 31^st at the Clarke Lounge in Campus Center, you may choose one of the suggested restaurants in and around Ithaca! “Bee Olympics” will be held on the Ithaca College Quad on Tuesday evening – a fun event to participate in as a team or cheer everyone on as a spectator. We also welcome our Master Beekeeper candidates who will begin their certification process on Tuesday, August 2^nd – best wishes to all!

The main EAS 2022 Conference runs from Wednesday, August 3^rd to Friday, August 5^th. Early birds can attend Yoga for Beekeepers from 6:00 – 7:00 a.m., grab some breakfast and head into the Emerson Suites on the second floor of the Campus Center for Keynote Speakers. Wednesday will feature. Dr. David Tarpy: Eight Important Milestones in Beekeeping , Thursday will feature Dr. Stephen Pernal – the Hambleton Award Winner and Michael Palmer: Brood Factories and Friday will feature Emma Walters – the Morse Award Winner and Dr. Tom Seeley.

Afternoons will offer five to six different breakout sessions, from Training the Trainer, News from the Lab and Field, Hive Products-Basic and Advanced, Bee Interactions, Bee skills, three afternoons of Apitherapy, a Wednesday tour to Kutik’s commercial bee operation and another opportunity to do some microscopy in the lab. Don Hopkins and Jennifer Keller will lead activities in the Apiary, conveniently located on the Quad. Friday will feature a guided tour of the Cornell University Botanic Gardens and the collection of bee-related materials that are curated in Cornell University Mann Library.

A children’s program will be offered on Thursday for two different age levels (4-7 and 8-12), please see the specific registration for this event.

Food draws us together and the conference will offer a Mexican style BBQ at Kutik’s on Wednesday, August 3^rd,full of authentic flavor but gentle on the spices, a Life-Time Member Luncheon on Thursday, August 4^th, a New York style BBQ at Ithaca College on Thursday, August 4^th which will include the live auction and a Friday night banquet at Ithaca College to recognize the winners of the honey show, the presentation of the new Master Beekeepers, the new Life Members and the Divelbliss awardee are announced.

Bring a jar or two of honey and place them in the Honey Exchange – a great chance to sample honey from other locales.

After a two-year hiatus, the Honey Show returns! Honey Show Registration and entry drop off will open in the Klingenstein Lounge on the second floor of the Ithaca Campus Center with entries being received at specific times Tuesday, August 2^nd and Wednesday, August 3^rd. EAS 2022 will continue its tradition of Master Beekeeper certification to recognize qualified beekeepers who will provide education and assistance to beginning beekeepers and serve in other capacities in the community as experts in beekeeping. Those seeking certification apply and are scheduled for the oral, field, lab and written components of the certification by the Master Beekeepers. Certification is from Tuesday, August 2nd through Wednesday, August 3rd.

The recipients of three awards are recognized at this year’s conference. The winner of the James I. Hambleton Memorial Award that recognizes excellence in research is Dr. Stephen Pernal, who serves as Officer-in-Charge of Beaverlodge Research Farm, Alberta, Canada. We will hear his presentation on Thursday, August 4^th. The Morse Outstanding Teaching/Extension Service/Regulatory Award is Emma Mullen Walters, the most recent Senior Honeybee Extension Associate at Cornell University who will present on Friday, August 5^th. The surprise announcement of the winner of the Charles and Evelyn Divelbiss Education Wards will be made at the Friday banquet, August 5^th! The EAS Student Apiculture Award was established to recognize students studying apiculture at the undergraduate or graduate level in a recognized college or university in the United States or Canada. The 2022 recipient of this award is Alvaro De la Mora, an international graduate student at the School of Environmental Sciences, University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

The EAS Foundation for Honey Bee Research is a competitive grant program developed from donations received from beekeepers and others interested in funding research on topical problems in honey bees. This year, the 2019 Honey Bee Research Grant recipient, Emma Walters and Dr. Chris Wahl will present their results on Wednesday, August 3^rd.

Monday, August 1^st and Tuesday, August 2^nd bee wranglers Don Hopkins and Jennifer Keller with provide hands on experiences in the Apiary located on the Quad of Ithaca College. These will continue in the main conference on Thursday, August 4^th. Topics range from smoker lighting, bee behavior from the outside, how to conduct a hive inspection, varroa levels and treatment and queen right assessment in a colony.

Wednesday will feature. The EAS is supported by vendors who bring their products and knowledge go the vendor area. It allows registrants to come up to speed on the latest equipment, treatments and management practices from a wide range of both small and large vendors. The vendors will be located in the lower level of the Fitness Center, across from the Campus Center and Apiary. Time has been allocated in the schedule to visit the vendor area that will be open from Monday, August 1^st to Friday, August 5^th. Morning and afternoon snack breaks are held in the vendor area and we encourage you to visit our supportive vendors!

EAS 2022 will continue its three auction modes: a virtual auction that runs ahead of and into the conference; silent auctions that run each day of the main conference; and a live auction held with the Thursday night BBQ, August 4^th on the Ithaca Campus Quad. These are lively events and feature items of equipment, queen bees, crafts and more. The funds from these auctions continue the work of EAS in education and Research and provide a fun opportunity to support EAS.

For those interested in a little “wake-up” activity before the sessions start the conference regularly features either yoga or zumba sessions, free and open to all. These sessions provide for a fun way to get the kinks out and the energy flowing before breakfast and the conference schedule.

You have indicated that you would like to “Dine Around Town” with the EAS Conference on Monday, August 1st . That is great!!

Below is a list of restaurants we are recommending for that evening as well as a linked menu for each. We are arranging
a “host” (sorry, they aren’t buying dinner for you) who will drive their own vehicle. Each restaurant will be on a separate sheet of paper and will indicate how many passengers the host driver can take. There are sign-ups for additional folks willing to drive – please consider being a driver if you can – we have a marvelous turnout of 135+ folks, and this is going to require a number of vehicles. If you are willing to drive, please put your name in the driver spot of the next vehicle and indicate the number of passengers you can take. We ask each person who drives or signs up as a passenger to provide their phone number so we can communicate that evening, if necessary.

We are excited to welcome you to Ithaca and hope this evening of good food, great company and bee chat will get us off to a great start to the week!
